Real Time Journey Planner: Difference between revisions

The Real Time Journey Planning (RTJP) webservice can be used to request journey and fare information from National Rail Enquiries' Online Journey Planner (OJP) service. This API provides the same functionality found on the NRE website, including advanced options, and also includes functionality not available via NRE, such as requesting journeys earlier in the day, or without fares.

RTJP is based on information from several sources, including Darwin for real-time train running information, and the National Reservation System for real-time fares availability.

RTJP licensing and usage conditions

Online Journey Planner APIs are only available to users under a formal contract, signed by both parties. To apply, complete a licence request form and send it to RDG's licensing team (nationalraildatafeeds@raildeliverygroup.com).

RDG is obliged by terms of its contract with SilverRail – RTJP's vendor – to include a licence condition prohibiting the use of RTJP in conjunction with ticket retailing on third-party websites.

Usage of RTJP is chargeable at cost-recovery rates, particulars of which can be obtained from RDG.

Timetable Groups

The journey planning service used by NRE includes a concept of timetable groups, which act as aliases for multiple locations. Timetable groups allow for a single All Stations group location to be used to submit multiple 'member' locations for journey planning purposes. For example, the Coulsdon (All stations) timetable group can be used to request journeys to/from Coulsdon South or Coulsdon Town.

RTJP's timetable groups are a convenience for journey planning, and do not correspond to fare groups, which group locations for fares purposes. Timetable groups may exist where there is no fare group equivalent (such as in the Coulsdon example), or may have the same name as a fare group (e.g. London, Birmingham), but these can contain different member locations.
