Appearance
Train service codes (TSCs) are 8-digit codes used to relate train services to service groups for performance monitoring.
| Position | Description |
|---|---|
| 1 | Passenger trains use '1' or '2', freight and engineering trains used '5' or 7', and Eurostar services use '8' |
| 2 | This was originally used as a geographic area code, but is now allocated without a pattern |
| 3-6 | For freight trains, this is the service group number. For passenger trains, characters 3-5 are the contract code |
| 7-8 | For freight trains, an optional sequence number for different origins |
